Yakutia has accumulated a mineral and raw materials resource base composed of diamonds, gold, coal, antimony, tin, iron, phosphates and rare earth metals of varying quality and quantity. In the 1970-80s the rate of commercial size mining of hard minerals essentially increased in the region. This growth predestined advancement in scientific backing of mineral mining projects under conditions of permafrost zone and, as a consequence, foundation of the Institute of Mining of the North, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in Yakutsk in 1980. The main scientific framework of the Institute’s activity is the comprehensive exploitation of mineral resources and analysis of thermophysical and geomechanical processes in permafrost formations considering the specificity of mining in permafrost zone and the anthropogenic effect. The article notes some fundamental and applied research findings obtained by the Institute of Mining of the North, that are important for progression of mining theory and practice. Principles of grain-size classification of geomaterials and theory of mineral and elemental composition analysis have been developed. Methods of computational solution of problems of geomechanics and rock thermophysics are modified based on data of thermomechanical monitoring of rocks. It has been found that energy input in destruction of various genesis and porosity rocks in the temperature range –5…–15 °С is lower by 10–40% than under positive temperatures. The procedures are offered for calculating and adjusting optimal thermal regime parameters in mines in permafrost zone. Efficient parameters of heatshielding tunnel lining are validated. The designed special-purpose geo radar set allows reliable problem solving in re-exploration of mineral deposits aimed to acquire detailed information on their structure. The continuous flow process technology using a bucket wheel excavator-and-conveyor set has been introduced in placer mining. The article describes the scientific-organizational work at the Institute.
