Abstract

Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe company has developed Al–H–Mn steel that is charac-terized by large flexibility related to continuous casting. Production of such steels is possible and has been tested practically both by conventional method of continuous casting and by twin-roll mould for direct strip casting. Conventional and innovative casting technologies are compared and practical experience is generalized. It is necessary to provide stability of the technological process during continuous casting, and interaction between the technological medium and the melt of Al–H–Mn steel can have a negative effect on both kinds of continuous casting. Optimization of technological parameters during continuous casting allows to prevent critical saturation of Al2O3. However, this dynamic equilibrium can be violated due to variation of technological conditions. Solving of this problem is based on usage of steel pouring mix based on the systems that are resistant to secondary oxidation. As for the case of direct strip casting, the model of the mechanism of defect forming has been developed and it was the base for suggesting several technological solutions aimed on elimination of possible negative effects and improvement of products quality.
