High energy prices and the discussions about CO2 emissions have forced energy-intensive industries to look for more efficient combustion techniques. A very promising technique in this framework is High Efficiency Combustion (HEC), also referred to as High Temperature Air Combustion (HiTAC). This technique uses state-of-the-art regenerators to heat up combustion air to temperatures above 1 000 oC by means of hot flue gases. These high air temperatures result in a very efficient combustion process, while peak temperatures and thus excessive NOx formation in the furnace are prevented by injecting fuel and air at high velocities. In this paper the results of a fullscale industrial test on High Efficiency Combustion in one of Corus’ reheat furnaces for steel slabs are presented. This paper also describes two other promising HEC applications at Corus.
