Abstract

Structures of the majority of aircraft are based on aluminum alloys, showing a number of advantages. However, laser cutting results in edge surfaces of an improper quality. The paper studied finishing of edges of aircraft body parts from aluminum alloys to improve the quality of downstream joints. The authors suggested a magnetic abrasive polishing method for edges of aircraft body parts. The paper describes a choice of parameters of operating process medium: rationale for choosing ferro-abrasive powder, a coolant and magnetic induction values. To carry out a simulation of a magnetic abrasive polishing process, the authors used the ANSYS software suite and received the simulation results of a magnetic field in the machining gap and a graph of distribution of the magnetic induction along a center line of the machining gap. An experimental part of the conducted studies contributed to assessing the influence of the selected parameters of operating process medium on roughness of the machined surface.
