Abstract

The paper observes the problems of dust forming during production of ferro-alloys in electric arc furnaces. Known data about dust properties are collected. Mathematical description of this process is presented, it correlates with experimental data and makes it possible to start development of the manual for calculation of emissions of melting dust from electric arc furnaces. Chemical and dispersed composition of the dust emitted from the closed ferro-alloy furnaces are analyzed. Dependence between dust content in emitted gases and furnace voltage during melting of 45% FeSi as well as dependence between speed of evaporation of substances and melt temperature at 20 ºC environment temperature are observed and analyzed. It is proved that the main part of dust is forming as a result of evaporation of melt around electrodes, consequent condensation of vapor and solidification of condensate as separate particles. Distillation mechanism of forming ferro-alloy dust allows to provide calculation of capacity of dust emissions from the furnace. Recommendations for decrease of dust emissions from such sources are given. It is concluded that electric arc furnaces of new generation with stirring in the bath are the best units for melting ferro-alloys owing to decrease of melt surface temperature.
