ThyssenKrupp CSA built a new steel mill complex in Santa Cruz/Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for a yearly production of 5 million t of slabs. Coal and coke are delivered by ship to the own port, whereas sinter feed, pellets and lump ore arrive by train. Materials are moved internally by belt conveyors and five stackers/reclaimers to and from the yard. Intermediate products have to be moved from plant to plant or to the yard. The following article presents the design of the new raw material handling and its ramp-up.The amount of transported material as well as the flow rates of the transport routes could be significantly increased after ramp-up. Based on a cause analysis of the route, an economic and fast solution for elimination of the discovered bottleneck concerning the blast furnace fines was designed and implemented. The coke plant is supplied with coking coal by the two SR 201 or 202. The sinter plant is fed by all reclaimers, depending on the required raw material. Up to 2 750 t/h of raw material can be supplied to the sinter plant in order to reach the planned annual production of 5.7 million t of sinter. To ensure the planned annual production of about 5.3 million t of hot metal, the stock house of the blast furnaces has a receiving capacity of upto 1 000 t/h. The burden materials are screened before charging. Coke and iron fines are collected in separate bunkers and sent directly to the sinterplant or to the yard for further treatment or storage. The recovered amount of coke and ore fines is about 350 t every 3 h. After final optimization full operational transport capacities will be achieved.
