Modernization of the heating systems in several forging shops has been undertaken at the enterprises of Vitkovice Machinery Group (Ostrava, Czech Republic). The company Vitkovice Schreier s.r.o. has replaced both high-velocity and flat-flame radiant burners with self adjusting concept. The paper presents description of different aspects of two heating technologies and comparison of parameters of these systems. 180-t forging furnace with radiant flat-flame burners and construction of the radiant flatflame burner are displayed, including the burner operating position in a cold and in a hot furnace. Flame shape of high-velocity burners is analyzed. The fuel consumption is compared for the seven forging furnaces. Owing to lowered power consumption, usage of flat-flame radiant burners provides decrease of nitrogen and carbon dioxide emissions as well as more favourable operating conditions for the furnace from the point of view of refractory lining and can be considered as an attractive alternative for the systems operating with high-velocity burners.
