This special issue of «Tsvetnye Metally» (Non-ferrous metals) journal is devoted to the Museum of the History of Mastering and Development of Norilsk Industrial Region. Nowadays, this museum is a cultural and historical center of Norilsk. Funds of the museum include many interesting collections and objects, such as: unique geological and mineralogical collection; collection of everyday objects of Norilsk citizens, who lived in 1940-s; memorial complex of N. N. Urvantsev; works of Norilsk and Taymir artists, etc. Visitors of this museum can get the priceless information about the discovery of the treasures of taiga; memory about the great tragedy of Russian people; evidences about the titanic efforts during the mastering of subsoils; and impressive appearance of the constantly developed Norilsk Mining and Metallurgical Complex (MMC). The museum is both a cultural center, and an important keeper and guide of experience of the previous generations.
This special issue includes the introduction article, written by the Director of the museum, S. G. Slesareva: «Collections of the Museum of the History of Mastering and Development of Norilsk Industrial Region have more than 50 thousand objects, which describe the unique evidences of geological mastering of Arctic regions, history of development of Norilsk Industrial Region, and creation of mining and metallurgical industry in the Far North».
Reader of this special issue will find out many interesting materials about the museum collections and objects of one of the northernmost museums in the world.
Articles of this special issue tell about the history of museum, museum collections and the history of Norilsk MMC. The range of articles is devoted to the people, who created the phenomena of Norilsk and who made the Russian metallurgy famous, due to their own labour. Authors of these articles tell about the events, versions, adventures, legends and historical monuments.
