Chernye Metally
The 1st issue of "Chernye Metally" journal (2014) starts conventionally with the section "Iron and steel news of the world" with brief information from China, India, Canada, USA, Saudi Arabia, Slovenia and Korea.
The problem of noise decreasing originating from contact and collision of machine and mechanisms details in industrial equipment is rather actual at present time. The paper "Dampfing steel alloyed with vanadium and chromium" by E. B. Ten, E. B. Utepov, M. U. Alimanova, Zh. T. Orzhanova is devoted to this problem. The authors have investigated acoustic characteristics for the standard low alloyed steels 15Cr, 20Cr, 18CrMn and 15CrV, and also the experimental alloys AM1, AM2, AM3 and AM4 and suggested the ways of solving this problem.
The nest publication in the section "Development of metallurgy in Russia and CIS countries" is the article "Influence of titanium nitride on quality of products made of carbide steel TiC-Kh18N10T" by Yu. G. Gurevich, the professor of Kurgan State University. He has examined microstructure of films forming on the surface of liquid stainless steel at different temperatures. More details can be found in this issue.
Information about design and construction of the new lengthwise-wedge rolling mill providing regulation of a longitudinal and transversal thickness deviation and flatness, as well as reduction of rolling force from one stand to another in the direction of rolling can be found in the publication prepared by S. A. Mashekov, N. T. Smailova, A. E. Nurtazaev, A. S. Mashekova from Kazakh National Technical University named after K. I. Satbaev.
The section "Iron and steel making" is presented by the paper "Benefits of bottom gas purging in electric arc furnace" by the authors from RHI AG (Austria). M. Kirschen, K.-M. Zettl have proved that direct bottom gas purging not only efficiently promotes mixing of the steel melt in the entire steel bath, but also provides constant gas bubble columns to avoid CO boiling retardation. Eight examples of application of direct purging plugs for carbon, special and alloyed steels are observed and corresponding technical parameters are displayed.
The section "Rolling" includes in this issue two articles. M. Höller-Schlieper and T. Ewert described describes general considerations to get closer to the task, approaches for solving this task, principles of simulation, proven solutions, filling the quality evaluation protocols, recognition of defect areas, comparative analysis and different benefits for the users. The process model for hot rolling mills, presented in the paper by D. Ehlert, O. Jepsen, G. Schneider, is used by SMS Siemag AG company. The focus during model development is on the best possible physical description of the rolling and production process in order to obtain a high product quality and to minimize the need for complex adaptation algorithms.
How to increase the service life of for pickling line rolls at the works ArcelorMittal Bremen? J. Mehrl and R. Beesley answered this question in the section "Heat treatment and coating" of this issue. The conducted experiments allowed to formulate the following recommendations: it is necessary to use the rolls for pickling line only with cylindric barrel; operating pressure should be restricted; NBR-coating is required for rolls operated in acidic media (including sewages, pH ‹ 1) for rising their service life, for other applications Clouth-Pured-coated rolls can be used.
The reasons of putting into practice the power-saving program for electric arc furnaces are substantiated in the article "Evaluation of usage of power-efficient drives", based on the fact that general operating expenses for colling system pumps make 90 % from total electric power consumption. Metallurgical works of Energy Steel Belgium (ESB) company saves 45,000 Euro annually as production expenses since mounting of power-efficient electric drive fed from frequency transformer in the cooling system of one of its melting furnaces, and it can be considered as a good example for iron and steel industry that is characterized by rather high level of power consumption.
The issue also includes the sections "Power engineering and ecology", "Metallurgy and automotive industry" and "Metallurgical history".
