Chernye Metally
The 11th issue of "Chernye Metally" journal (2014) is opened by with the actual metallurgical news from different countries and news of metallurgical companies, such as Outokumpu VDM, MAE Maschinen und Apparatebau GmbH, Nextsense GmbH and ThyssenKruppAG.
The section "Development of metallurgy in Russia and CIS countries" is opened by the paper "Progressive technology of modification of high-strength iron" by P. A. Sluzov, V. K. Sedunov, V. A. Korovin, I. O. Leushin. At present time, no one of the casting structural materials can be compared with high-strength iron, meaning diversity of its technical application. It was found out by the authors that usage of the new method for modifier introduction as powder wire can be considered as the most prospective direction of iron spheroidizing treatment.
V. N. Nevidimov, V. A. Grebtsov and S. S. Semkov have examined the improvement of slag forming conditions in steel making at the Metallurgical plant named after A. K. Serov. Viscosity of industrial slags has been studied. The saturation concentration of calcium oxides and magnesium oxides in the slag as well as the composition of slag forming material which forces the process of slag formation and improves the physico-chemical properties of the slag for increasing the content of magnesium oxide have been determined.
The paper "Simulation of efficient pulverized coal injection into the blast furnace by means of the Oxycoal technology" by R. Schott and M. Schumacher opens the section "Iron and Steel making". It was concluded that the use of the Oxycoal technology involving the simultaneous injection of pure oxygen and pulverized coal via coaxial lances into the tuyère and the raceway of the blast furnace enables further optimization of the economic efficiency. The use of the Oxycoal technology involving the simultaneous injection of pure oxygen and pulverized coal via coaxial lances into the tuyère and the raceway of the blast furnace enables further optimization of the economic efficiency.
Crystallization behaviour of blast furnace slags is important in the daily practice at the blast furnace. During a planned stoppage of the blast furnace, the remaining slag in the furnace can freeze. Like this it can provoke big problems for the new start of the blast furnace process afterwards. The authors S. Mohr, H.-P. Heller, B. Lychatz, A. Franzen, T. Buhles, E. Unland and J. Janz have examinedcrystallization behaviour of blast furnace slags. The results of testings have displayed that SHT technique can be considered as rather good and precise method for measuring crystallization temperature.
R. Buschfeld and D. Guldan in their work "Effectife metal separation from slags via dry concentration in melting of high quality steel" have searched the problem that slag forming during melting of high quality steel in the electric arc furnace contains some valuable substances that can be returned in the melt or can be used rationally in any other way. It is displayed that comminution via shock-and-reverberation technology with magnetization of high quality steel had positive estimations in commercial production.
The article "Fast current control of an AC-EAF with a solid state on-load tap changer" by H. Schnack, K. Krüger, A. Babizki and Junliang Wu is devoted to development by Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen GmbH and Helmut Schmidt University of a control algorithm for AC-EAF based upon a solid-state tap changer (OLTC) for electric arc furnaces. Especial attention has been paid to development of recognition algorithms providing forecast of variation of current load in the nearest 10 or 20 ms and to ignore retarding time that is usual for thyristors.
G. Wimmer, K. Pastucha, E. Wimmer and A. Fleischanderl from Siemens VAI Metals Technologies GmbH presented The Jet Process offering a solution for operating converters with up to 100 % scrap and direct reduced iron. This enables operators of melt shops to respond to raw material supply bottlenecks and exploit short-term price fluctuations. The solution consists of a bottom-blowing converter to blow in oxygen, lime and coal through bottom tuyères and a hot blast lance for efficient post combustion.
In the section "Continuous Casting", the paper "New vertical techniques for continuous casting" by P. Pennerstorfer, H. Thöne and F. Wimmeris observes improvement of the new continuous casting technique, the bow-type caster emerged and became more and more important due to further savings. In addition to continuous improvements and upgrading with modern technological packages, this paper presents some examples. Principal scheme of a vertical continuous caster allows to cast practically all steel grades, especially those that are characterized by instability at the bow-type casting machines.
The "Rolling" section contains the papers "Strategies of technical maintenance of hot rolling mills" by J. Corts and A. Corts and "Operation of the new HSS type of work rolls in hot strip mill finishing trains" by H. Hölzl and Ch. Haberkorn.
Other publications in this issue are included in the sections "Metallurgy and automotive industry" and "Economics and finances".
