Gornyi Zhurnal



The 10-th issue of the Gornyi Zhurnal (Mining Journal) (October, 2015) shows the geological, geophysical and nature conservation aspects of an urgent problem – the deep nuclear waste disposal.

 

A huge amount of nuclear wastes (more than 510 mln m3), which is an extreme danger for the commonwealth and environment, was cumulated for the period of intense development of nuclear industry on the territory of Russia. Until recently, the ideology of a long-term storage of nuclear wastes and delayed solving of their final isolation problems has been prevalent. A large-scale solving of the cumulated nuclear waste liquidation problems has begun only in the last years, when Russian society and state structures formed the understanding of the fact that nuclear waste treatment safety is a fundamental condition of further development of both nuclear industry and economics in whole.

 

This issue shows various opinions and approaches of leading scientists and specialists, dealing with the problem of underground isolation of nuclear wastes in geological formations on the common ideological platform – comprehensive and complete investigation of geological environment on whole hierarchy levels as the basic and the most reliable isolation barrier, providing the nuclear safety of population and environment.

 

Nuclear waste disposal problem is connected with the deep investigation of soils, that's why the obtained information may be interesting for the specialists, solving the practical tasks in the area of mining.
