The June 2019 Issue of Mining Journal (No. 6, 2019) is devoted to the commemoration of Academician Melnikov—a distinguished mining scientist and the long-standing Director of the Mining Institute of the Cola Science Center RAS.
The colleagues and disciples of Nikolai N. Melnikov share memories about this outstanding personality and citizen, and develop the schools Melnikov fruitfully contributed to.
The focus of R&D activities both of Academician Melnikov and of the Mining Institute, KSC RAS is the mineral mining and processing sector of the Murmansk Region; thus, this Journal issue largely addresses various aspects of this sector performance. The articles discuss the current situation and development prospects of the sector in whole and in terms of its top-level representatives—Apatit and Kovodorsky Mining and Processing Integrated Works. The scope of the discussion embraces questions of subsoil management, development strategy for mineral resources, mining and processing technologies for natural materials and waste, as well as aspects of geomechanics and ecology.
A special section of the Journal is devoted to underground construction of atomic power stations—one of the research areas developed by Nikolai N. Melnikov. In recent years he was also engaged in recovery of oil and gas reserves of the Arctic, which is adverted to, as well.
All in all, this Mining Journal issue offers a broad and comprehensive picture of the protean scientific work of Academician Melnikov and displays avenues of further research to be accomplished by his colleagues and disciples.
