The paper "Improvement of the technology of casting of large-size forging ingots from high-strength shipbuilding steel" by V. G. Milyuts, V. V. Tsukanov, A. A. Kazakov et al. is devoted to improvement of the technology of casting of large-size forging ingots from high-strength shipbuilding steel. The aim of the work was development and putting into practice the technologies of casting of such ingots at atmospheric pressure in argon media and via uphill casting under slag-forming mixes with metal jet protection from secondary oxidation by argon.

Drying of the modern lining materials was the main theme of the article by A. V. Savin, V. E. Nikol'sky, D. V. Vokhmintsev et al. The results of numerical simulation of drying processes of modern pouring refractory materials for steel pouring ladles, tundishes and iron transportation ladles are presented. The principles of organization of drying process allowing to get maximal resistance of lining, minimal time and power consumption are proposed.

A. A. Ishchenko and I. A. Kolesnichenko present in their paper the results of industrial usage of composites for restoration of large-size components of rolling equipment, e.g. housings of rolling stands, roll chops etc. Experience of operation of repaired components has shown that developed method of restoration of worn basements allows not only to decrease expenses for repair and maintenance, but also to expand operating interval between repairs for such equipment.

Foreign part of the issue is presented by several articles including large review about German cokemaking industry by H.-B. Beckmann, G. Dombrowski, H.-W. Jager et al. J. Eisenkolb, R. Fandrich and H.-P. Jung observed in their paper state of development in ingot casting and remelting technology since its beginnings in the second half of the 19th century. After continuous casting was introduced in the 1960s, ingot casting production has concentrated increasinglyon large-dimension and niche products, which either cannot be coped with by continuous casting or areneeded only in very small quantities.

Optimized process control of ladle stirring by on-line monitoring is examined in the article by Ch. Dannert, H. Köchner and F. P. Groß. A new measurement system, based on thermographic imaging and digital image processing, guarantees appropriately close limits of the gas stirring intensity during rinsing.

D. Rosenthal, P. Sudau, J. Schlüter and H. Gärtner in their paper "Process technologies and plant concepts for the manufacture of new materials" observed development of materials that will gain in importance in the future. While on the one hand the process models and plant technology available today must keep pace with this development, the new underlying conditions such as the saving of resources, CO2 emissions and energy consumption must be fulfilled on the other hand. To implement the above, plant designers and builders must come up with suitable technical solutions.

Economical section is presented by the survey "Steel production under economic extremes" by K. Harste and H. B. Lüngen.
