Abstract

The developed technology provides for complete utilization of coalfired power plants' fly ash with maximum possible recovery of not only carbon, but also iron with a view to produce alumino-silicate product, suitable for production of construction materials. Quantites of Fe2O3, accumulated in ash dumps of a number of power plants, that burn coal from Ekibastuz and Kuznetsk Coal Basins, indicate that ash is an important large source of magnetic products. The differential characteristic of ash, if compared with iron ore deposits, is that it contains iron in the form of magnetic balls and glass phase. Balls are present as separate formations and in intergrowth with glass phase. On the basis of the results of Kashirskaya power plant fly ash phase and chemical analysis, as well as fly ash physical properties, the power plant in question burning coal from Kuznetsk Coal Basins, a technology for fly ash beneficiation has been developed. The proposed technology is based on electro dynamic separation, which, using eddycurrent effect in electrically conductive minerals, also permits to recover weaklymagnetic particles into magnetic product. Magnetic product from electrodynamic separator, resulting from ash with 8 % iron content, is represented by magnetic balls, and is further subjected to attritioning, desliming, drying and classification. Fraction finer than 80 microns contains approximate ly 70 % iron, fraction coaser than 80 microns — 60 % iron. Total recovery of iron into both products exceeds 50 %. Field of utilization of these products is quite large.
