Abstract

Red mud is widely recognized as a promising secondary resource material, formed in processing of bauxites and suitable for utilization in various fields of the national economy. Owing to a sufficiently high iron grade, red mud is of a particular interest with regard to ferrous metals metallurgy, but, due to its high dispersibility, requires prelumping. This work considers a possibility for nonfluxed agglomerate production from red mud. The experimental studies performance method and use of laboratory equipment are described, including standard methods of agglomerate abrasion and impact index testing. It is shown, that red mud chemical composition, following its filtering and drying, practically does not depend on classified material fraction, used for sinter mix preparation. The dependance between sinter quality and sintering plant specific output on mix composition and moisture content, fuel consumption and rate of sintering is determined. It was experimentally determined, that mix for red mud sintering requires increased moisture content, and produced sinter is distinguished by a higher abrasion index. On the other hand, a decrease in specific production rate of sintering process is noted, if compared with standard iron ore agglomerates sintering process.
