Abstract | Selection of a shovel model for the present-day high-production open pit mines and quarries where truck-and-shovel method of mining is used is an integrated procedure. The group of assessing technologists and practitioners should study in detail various models of excavators and their specifications in order to verify that the choice is correct — the chosen machine is capable to maintain the designed capacity at the least incremental cost of material handling. High-mobility diesel hydraulic excavators are the best option for selective cutting of bands and complex deposits where machine relocation is frequently required or power supply is unavailable. Large powerful electric shovels are the popularly accepted machines for high and economic production where reliability is the key factor of cost effectiveness. The article generalizes experience gained in employment of the above indicated equipment in order to simplify and improve the process of selecting the required shovels for open pit mining. The authors hope the article provides a deeper insight in selection of hydraulic and electric mechanical shovels to personnel engaged in mine management and equipment operation and maintenance, as well as to students—future mining machine engineers, or to lecturers. The final specific decision on shovel model choice must be based upon personal preference and value engineering. |
