Abstract

The article presents a case study on contamination of the environment by industrial plants situated inside an inhabited locality. Such situation is typical for the city of Vladikavkaz where Electrozinc Metallurgical Plant, an environmentally hazardous production facility, is situated within the limits of the city. For well-timed recording, analysis and prevention of hazardous production emissions, an information-and-analysis system has been created and encompasses both the mentioned plant and other factories within the city. The layered structure of the system and interoperation of subsystems and control units, including the unit for coordination and control of subsystem interoperation, engineered by the present authors, is described. The programs and databases are accustomed to hardware of permanent models of geo-information systems and are compatible with the available software support. The application of the proposed system in monitoring and analysis of production-induced contamination in Vladikavkaz as a consequence of metallurgical plant operation may contribute to balancing environmental situation across the entire Republic of North Ossetia – Alania. Added by specific details of test objects, the software support becomes applicable in any geographical region of the Russian Federation.
