Abstract

It is urgently required to expand Zhezkazgan resource base to maintain the mine and extend its life for a few more decades. The inventory of the current resources of Zhezkazgan deposit has been undertaken, and the approaches to differentiation of commercial reserves and mining waste have been developed. It is proposed to expand the mine resource base through the use of low-grade ore and dredge previously assumed to be noncommercial reserves, and ore reserves registered as lost, as well as by means of complete extraction of assured reserves owing to processing of old standard-grade mining waste at Zhezkazgan deposit. High-level physicochemical processing of formerly off-grade natural minerals and mining waste (off-grade dumped ore, tailings, etc.) enables recovery of both principal valuable mineral component and associate rare and rare-earth elements. This ensures complete development of mineral and basic material reserves of the deposit and has beneficial effect on financial performance of the mine. All new waste is to be obligatory disposed in mined-out voids of the open pit and underground mine. The authors of this article suggest using off-grade old waste free from commercial mineral components to manufacture building materials or backfill mixtures and forwarding new waste to forming working deposits for further processing. The process chart of mineral flows has been developed for integrated mineral mining at Zhezkazgan deposit. The process flow sheet of the complete environmentally balanced cycle for Zhezkazgan deposit development has been selected.
