Safety of mining practice is included in higher education programs for vocational training of mining engineers in Russia. The key task of the Department at the current stage is the prompt correction of the higher qualification personnel training to conform with the present and future challenges. Accordingly, improvement of labor conditions and enhancement of industrial safety directly depends on competence of the Department staff to generate full-value conception of industrial safety for the tobe specialists. The ability of the Department to improve continuously the training and educational activities is the relevant demonstrative example for the graduates. The article presents the recent 150 years long history of the contribution made by the Department of Industrial Safety, Saint-Petersburg Mining University, to launching and buildup of mine aerology and safety philosophy in Russia. The objectives set for the Department up to 2020 are to be achieved by means of its interconnection with the industry. It is crucially important to train professionals in the field of industrial safety based on the analysis of actual labor conditions in Russia and in the world, and the methods and ways of improving the educational process are defined. The authors describe the education process arrangement and equipment, and specify ways of improvement toward the enhancement of quality of training of mining engineers. Scientific achievements and research activities of the Department are illustrated. The scope of the article also embraces engagement of students in scientific work using an assistant–professor system. The article describes the capacities and achievements of the Department in retraining of higher qualification personnel and emphasizes the importance of involvement of the Department staff in this process as a tool of updating of education programs for mining engineers. The relevancy of the connection between the Department and graduated engineers and postgraduates who are going to be engaged in training and educational activity of the Department is highlighted. |
