Abstract | The article presents the brief history of the Institute and the basic stages of its development, starting from a mining division of the Mining and Geology Institute of the Ural Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The objectives and basic lines of research and innovative activities in different periods of the Institute are specified. The achievements in the area of basic and applied research are characterized, including schools established while meeting the challenges in the given field of science: open pit mine transport, geomechanics, ore production quality control. It is shown that the basic and applied research at the Institute rest upon the principles of system analysis, complexity, interdisciplinarity and innovation in the area of subsoil use with a view to achieving energy efficiency, resource saving and production and ecology safety in the mining industry in the Ural Region and in Russia as a whole. The authors give the examples of some applied research on rock failure, underground mineral mining, improvement of iron ore mining by open pit method, ecology and geoinformation science. The gained experience and the recent restructuring allows the think-tank of the Institute, at this conjuncture, to continue advancing technical approaches to basic research and solving the pressing problems in the area of subsoil use. The cooperation of the Institute with the other design and science agencies, including international, promotes implementation of integrated targeted projects and researches for the mining industry. The resource base developed within many years and the mature research team allows the optimistic view of the further scientific growth prospects and new interesting discoveries and solutions. The approval and pilot trials of the theoretical evidence is implemented by the affi liated centers which bring the research findings to the ultimate users. An emphasis is laid on staffing and educational activities. |
