Abstract

In electric arc furnaces (EAF) high performance and productivity can be reached by fully utilizing existing transformer capacity with a rigid electrode lifting system and with the associated process knowhow for a mostly uniformed heat load operation. The electric transmission path to the arc has to be designed for a maximum power input or alternatively a more powerful transformer with a suitable high-current system up to the electrodes can be installed. Cycle times during power-off and power-on times may be reduced with faster single movements with new hydraulic settings. When making investments in the electric arc furnaces, the expenses for service, technical maintenance and modernization should be included in calculation of the total cost of a unit service life. At present time, the wide choice of technical solutions for modernization and reconstruction of EAF are available; they allow to save or even to increase the cost of a furnace as the main production facility. Corresponding measures are scheduled for a long-term period and contain detailed acquaintance of a service partner with technological operations and production processes at the customer’s site. It is concluded that collaboration with such common service live partner as Primetals Technologies Germany GmbH allows to achieve optimal productivity, technological flexibility and operating efficiency for electric arc furnace.
