Abstract |
Application of diamond powders is preceded by diagnostics of their running properties or characteristics. The diagnostics data are equally important for manufactures and consumers of diamond powders. The former need these data to standardize powders, the latter require this information for the efficient and rational utilization when engineering diamond-abrasive tools or diamond-based composite materials. However, the conventional methods set by the current standards for detecting many characteristics of powders of superhard materials (SHM) are time- and laborconsuming. Intensification of the process, as the review of recent publications shows, follows the way of improvement of diagnostic equipment, in particular, automation of testing, taking of data and their preprocessing. Considerable success is achieved for the characteristics of dimension, geometry and morphology (together with morphometry) owing to the computer-aided digital imaging. The article emphasizes that this approach to intensification of diagnostics of SHM powder characteristics conforms with the high potential of the modern equipment intended for the implementation of the approach. The authors present new computer-assisted informative analytical methods for diagnostics and evaluation of service performance of diamond powders, other SHM powders and powder-based composite materials, to be implemented using the modern data acquisition equipment. |
