Science education on open pit mining originated in Moscow 100 years ago when the Moscow Mining Academy was founded and then progressed due to efforts of Professors E. F. Sheshko, V. V. Rzhevsky, G. A. Nurok and their followers. The science education was concerned with such fields as: theories of mineral accessing, mining systems, full-sale mechanization, mine planning and operating modes; mining of construction material deposits; scientific methods of open pit mining organization and management; mineral quality control in mining; geomechanical problems in open pit mining; dumping; efficient land use and environmental protection; open pit mine planning and design computerization; underground mining hydromechanization; underwater mineral mining. In all its history, the Moscow Mining School has prepared several thousands of specialists in different lines of profession and has greatly contributed to advancement in the open pit mining method. The merits of the School are acknowledged by the international technological society.
