The Geology and Surveying Department is a coeval of the Moscow Mining Academy founded in 1918. For a long time, the Department was divided into two separate structural divisions of Geology and Surveying and Geodesy. On September 1, 2015, the joint department was established at the College of Mining of the National University of Science and Technology—MISIS. All these years, the Department has been actively participating in mining engineer training and has been preparing specialists in the field of surveying for more than 95 years. Nowadays Department’s graduates work in all leading mining companies in Russia, CIS countries and Mongolia. Recently, essential development has been given to the education line concerned with the informational technologies in geological and surveying support in the mining industry. The relevant programs are launched in training of Masters and specialists. For the one-hundred-year-long history, the Department has given rise to a number of schools. The major interests lie in the areas of geological support of mining waste management, mineral quality control, monitoring of state of nature-and-technology systems, hydrogeological and engineering geological support of open pit mining, and geometrization of mineral deposits. In recent years, Department’s staff has implemented a series of research projects at leading mines. Among other things, remote slope control systems are introduced, and zoning is carried out at some mining waste accumulations. Department’s research projects are introduced at iron ore mines in the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly area, open pit coal mines in Kuzbass and at large construction plants located in the zones with complicated hydrogeological and ground conditions. A signature of the Geology and Surveying Department is perennially engagement of many young scientists in research projects. The team of students and post-graduate students composed at the Department of late years heatedly participate in the activities of the Department, College and the University, and develop new and existing research areas. Today the Geology and Surveying Department is a community enjoying sustainable development, historical background and high capabilities.
