Abstract | The article analyzes rates of accidents and lethal injuries in mining industry in Russia and in Kuzbass. Based on the literature review, the statistics on accidents in coal mines over the period from 1936 to 2016 is processed. As a result, the frequency of accidents with death in coal mines in Kuzbass was determined for the 80 years-long period (1936–2016), and the F/N diagram of social risk was plotted. For the diagram, it is necessary to know exact number of died employees per each accident within the study period, as well as data over a very long period of time. The resultant F/N diagram was compared with data for whole Russia. Then, the integral risks were calculated for the F/N curves of Russia and Kuban. The risk in Kuzbass was only 2.4 times less than in coal mines in Russia as a whole. The analysis yields that the largest scale accidents with numerous deaths take place in coal mines in Kuzbass, and very high social risk falls at the accident situations with 1 to 10 deceased per an accident (which is 60% of the total number). Close to 30 % of accidents are accompanied by 10 to 49 deceased per a case, which allows speaking of group accidents and, consequently, estimating social risk over a longterm period. The research findings can be used by the state supervision agencies in risk management at hazardous production objects and in development of safety charts, by social safety nets for employees at such objects for life and health insurance, as well as by occupational safety engineers in the analysis of hazards and assessment of risks with a view to reducing risk down to safe level. |
