D. S. Korzhinsky made a huge contribution to the development of geological science by turning crystallography and petrology from auxiliary, applied areas in geology into independent theoretical disciplines in the Earth science. The most of numerous works of literature telling about the biography of D. S. Korzhinsky are written in honor of anniversaries in the life of Dmitry Sergeevich, and present his memories of the childhood and youth, study at the Leningrad Mining Institute, work at the Geological Department of the Mining Institute and his research activities as a member of the Geological Committee. This article offers a scientific biography of D. S. Korzhinsky, mainly, the Leningrad period of his life. On the archival evidence from the Saint-Petersburg Mining University and the Central State Archive of Saint-Petersburg, as well as transactions of the Central Research Institute of Geological Prospecting for Base and Precious Metals, the All-Russian Geological Institute and others, the author have made an attempt to analyze the practical (exploration, prospecting), scientific and teaching activities of D. S. Korzhinsky. |
