This article examines the development of the ore crushing theory and technology in pre-revolutionary Russia. The chronological scope of the study is limited to the period between the early 19 century and 1917. The latter date was not selected arbitrarily; it was then that manual crushing started to be gradually replaced by machine crushing
and the first scientific works were released on the theory and technology of ore preparation using crushers. The study is based on an analysis of the work of Russian researchers, experts in the field of mining. It is shown that the time from the beginning of the 19 century and up to 1917 is a distinct stage in the history of ore crushing in Russia. Researchers of that time would still question the feasibility of using crushing machines and support the validity of manual crushing: according to the experts, the appropriate crushing method was to be selected based on the texture of the ores. During this period, the scientific foundation for the crushing theory was established. Qualitative characteristics in the description of the crushing process were replaced by the quantitative data. The relevant scientific terminology was gradually being developed and refined, which was still quite different from the current terms. In addition, the laws of crushing were formulated, establishing the relationship between energy consumption and product fineness. This period may generally be referred to as a transition from the 18 century, when the scientific research into the crushing processes began, to the 20 century, when the science of crushing processes was fully formed.
