The article highlights the experience of introducing the project method in training personnel for the mining industry at the Polytechnic Institute—Division of the M.K. Ammosov North-Eastern Federal University in Mirny town which is the center of the diamond industry of Russia. A modern technical specialist should possess a set of competencies, including foreign language communicative competence that will allow him to freely navigate in the global space of intensively developing modern technologies in the professional sphere. The article proposes a model for the implementation of a comprehensive project approach in the framework of the additional educational program “Translation for expert communities” created by the teaching staff of the institute. The experiment covers the entire period of students’ education program. Starting from the first year of study, students are offered projects of various types and content in order to motivate their interest and encourage them to perform independently, search for non-standard and creative solutions to problematic tasks in a foreign language. The principle of systematic implementation and gradual complication of projects effectively and quickly encourages students to gain the skills that will allow them to be competitive in a rapidly developing environment, and to be ready to respond adequately to the challenges of the digital age. The experiment confirms that the systematic application of the project activity method increases the motivational, cognitive and reflexive components of learning. The proposed implementation of the project approach in the higher education according to the Federal State Educational Standard is considered by the authors the most appropriate and advisable.
