Abstract

This publication is to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Higher Mathematics Department at the Saint-Petersburg Mining University. Creation of the first mathematical department at the high engineering institutions in Russia was connected with the new stage of development of mathematical education in the country. The article describes efforts of the mathematical department toward reformation of the higher mathematics and engineering education, as well as research and training activities since the early rise of the Higher Mathematics Department at the Mining College and up to the present moment. The authors highlight the contribution made by the government, by the rector of the Saint-Petersburg Mining University, by the heads of the University’s departments, and by the lead lecturers of the Higher Mathematics Department to the advanced mathematical training of mining engineers. The ideas and decisions made by the management of Empress Catherine II Saint-Petersburg Mining University during curriculum modification can promote reaching objectives facing the University and the country. Blue ribbon panel of professors and lecturers, persistent modernization of infrastructure, construction of new latter-day educational buildings and student dormitories allow the Saint-Petersburg Mining University to create a comfortable environment for the students to pursue studies and science. The organizational structure of the University is improved to ensure flexibility and efficiency of management; new departments of geoecology, oil and gas field development, furnace technologies and recycling of energy carriers are created; engineer training in new and long-range specialties is launched. Historical traditions, continuity of generations and professional skills of professorial and magistral staff are also vital for qualitative training of high-skilled engineers.
