Abstract | The system analysis of the structure and composition of mineral resources discovered in the Far Eastern Federal District (FEFD) of Russia displays feasibility to create fundamental facilities of the mining industry in the region. Iron ore reserves of FEFD can cover requirements of the Far Eastern metallurgical plant at its full-scale production capacity of 6 Mt of metal annually. Implementation of that project launched within the framework of the public–private partnership by Petropavlovsk PLC in the early 2000s turned out to be impossible owing to insufficient government financing. The region possesses sufficient proven reserves and resources to begin own production of copper and copper-based end products. Amur Cable Plant operates successfully in the region, and there are enough capabilities to expand production volume of the plant. A copper smelter is needed to be constructed. Almost all tin reserves of Russia concentrate in FEFD. Tin mining is carried out solely by RUSOLOVO capable to satisfy the demand for tin in Russia. Also in the region of FEFD, mining of tungsten is carried out concurrently with prospecting, exploration andappraisal of new tungsten deposits. At the same time, the region needs development of hydrometallurgy. The raw materials export model of the economy in FEFD, as well as the lack of manufacturing activities and own consumption are the factors of poor social and economic modernization. The author emphasizes essentiality of a new strategy in development of mineral resources in the region, including technological innovations in separation and recovery of metals from complex raw materials. |
