Abstract

Hybrid geotechnology, which means concurrent or sequential opencast and underground mining operations at the same ore body, enjoys increasingly wider application both in the domestic and foreign practices of mineral production. In the Far East of Russia, at many gold ore deposits, it is required to transfer from the opencast to underground method. It is critical to account for rockburst hazard in this case. Mathematical modeling reveals the highest-stress areas in rock mass, and the terminal design parameters are justified for the structural components of the adopted systems of mining. 3D modeling finds out that sequential sublevel stoping operations generate higher stress zones mostly in the roofs of sublevel drifts above the backfill of the mined-out sublevel, and in the sublevel edge area adjoined to the stoping space. Stability estimation of basic elements of mine structures using the brittle and shear fracture criteria shows that at the final stages of deep-level mining, high loads are applied to the edge areas of rock mass along the minedout space, and to the roof of the sublevel drift on the upper level. For the conditions of hybrid opencast-and-underground mining at gold deposits in the south of the Far East of Russia, in case of unavailability of underground roadways and inapplicability of instrumental methods, the stress–strain assessment in rock mass and the direction sensing of regional compression can be implemented using the phenomenon of stress memory in acoustic emission and the methods of structural geology with regard to the regional neotectonic position of test objects.
