Abstract

Spotlight of the study is on factors that induce faults of dump trucks in placer mining in the permafrost areas. The authors highlight that weather and climate extremes, seasonal thawing of permafrost rocks, high water content of rock mass and specific features of placers generate a complex mining operation environment. This leads to a decrease in productivity of dump trucks and to an increase in the number of their faults in the warm seasons. In this connection, we need to determine factors that have the highest material effect on dump trucks to develop recommendations to enhance their efficiency. In order to assess the significance of some influences, an expert survey of responses from 19 mining experts in Yakutia and Irkutsk Region was carried out. The questionnaire offered to rank the influence of four selected factors: service life, road conditions, weather and climate conditions (low temperatures) and organization. It is assumed that geological and geotechnical factors have influence on the road conditions. Assessment involved two methods: ranking of the factors on a three-point scale and calculation of their percentage in origination of faults. The consistency of the expert opinions was proved by the calculation of Kendalls’ Coefficient of Concordance. The results show that the main factor that has an adverse impact on the performance reliability of dump trucks is the road conditions. The significance of this factor is 2 times higher than the factors of the service life, weather and climate conditions and organization (job sharing) have. Worsening of the road conditions in the thawing period leads to an increased abrasive wear of the chassis, to higher rolling resistance and to transmission overload. The research results can be used in development of recommendations on enhancement of the efficiency and reliability of performance of dump trucks in the specific conditions of permafrost.
