The effect of stoichiometry deviation towards Fe2O3 excess
or deficiency on the microstructure and properties of yttriumaluminum ferrogarnet has been studied. We show that for
Fe2O3 excess, the Fe3O4 magnetite phase grows along with
the ferrogarnet phase, while for Fe2O3 deficiency, the YFeO3
orthoferrite phase develops. For Fe2O3 excess, the densening
onset occurs later, at a higher temperature compared to
that for the stoichiometric composition. This property allows
one to separate the garnet formation and the proper sintering
processes in the temperature and time ranges. To obtain high
density ferrogarnet one should increase the sintering temperature
by 100 oC compared to that for the stoichiometric
composition.
We found that the two-phase material containing (along with
the matrix ferrogarnet phase) the YFeO3 phase has higher
magnetic properties compared to the single-phase stoichiometric
composition and one order of magnitude lower
dielectric losses due to the absence of ferrous cations and
the properties of YfeO3.
