Abstract The precise control of the casting and solidification process is of outstanding relevance for the production of high-quality steel grades. A new ultrasonic measurement system allows a real time prediction of the produced cleanliness. An advanced optical temperature measurement technique monitors the cooling efficiency of individual secondary cooling zones directly and consistently. This paper reports on experiences from applications at continuous casters for billets and blooms.
