With the introduction of the hydraulically adjustable three-roll bar mill, a new chapter has been opened in the history of rolling mill technology. The innovative concept for the rolling mill adjustment system is characterized by flexibility and speed. The computer-based technology system Carta supports the planning and optimization of the rolling operation. Configuration of this system is shown and explained. A wide range of different steel grades can be rolled more easily and quickly with the aid of this system. Setpoint selections for the rolling mill settings can be easily determined and transmitted to the rolling mill automation system via the data network. Visualization of roll pass design tables, of rolling technical parameters is presented and printscreens of technological data during rolling process are displayed. The system furthermore helps with the tracking and with the utilization planning of numerous different roll-ring sets. The problems of collecting and storage of such information are discussed. This innovation has been put into practice at rolling facilities of SMS Meer company (Germany).
