The department was founded under the name of "Mining Electrical Engineering". Creation and formation of the department is associated with names of F. I. Shklyarskiy, M. I. Ozernyy, L. V. Gladilina. The development of the department can be divided into six periods.

From 1964 till 1988, the department was called "Delf Electrification" and trained specialists by speciality 0634 "Electrification and Automation of Mining" (qualification — mining electricial engineer).

In 1988, the Department started graduating the mining electrician engineers by speciality “Electric drive and Automation of industrial installations and technological complexes ".

In 2004, the Department received a new name — "Delfs electrification and energy efficiency". Once again it started the graduating of diplomaed specialists by speciality “Electric Drive and Automation of industrial installations and technological complexes” with three special subjects: “Electrical Equipment and Automatics of delfs industrial installations and technological complexes; “Electrical equipment and automation of industrial installations and technological complexes in urban underground construction”, “Management of mountain enterprises energy resources".

The Department has trained over 5500 mining electrican engineers and electricians, about 400 bachelors of engineering and technology, 41 master, 386 candidates and 41 doctor of science.
