10.09.2013, 15:32
SMS Meer, Germany, has successfully upgraded the core components of a wire rod mill at Amsteel Mills in Banting, Malaysia. The modernization will enable the company to boost its productivity and to roll surface-quenched and tempered rebars at a speed of up to 105 meters per second.
Less standstill, more throughput: These were SMS Meer's goals in bringing the outdated wire rod mill at Amsteel to the state-of-the-art. The original plant had been delivered by Danieli in 1995.
The plant's ten-stand wire rod block and the high-speed loop laying head were replaced with SMS Meer's most modern models. In addition, the 17-year-old water cooling section with pinch roll unit was replaced. A process model for optimum temperature control will now ensure that the demanded microstructure properties are reliably achieved – while maintaining the close tolerances.
Amsteel together with Megasteel belongs to the steel division of the Lion Group, one of the largest companies in Malaysia, a conglomerate with headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
The modernization will enable Amsteel to boost its productivity and to roll rebars at a speed of up to 105 m/s.
