AMAG, Austria, has commissioned a tiltable melting and casting furnace from Hertwich Engineering, Austria. The furnace, type SGO-70+, has been developed jointly by the two companies. The capacity of the furnace is 70 tons, the nominal melting rate is designed for up to 12 tons per hour. As such, it is the largest combined melting and casting furnace that Hertwich has delivered to date and also the largest of its type at AMAG.
In comparison with conventional furnaces on the market the SGO-70+ furnace from Hertwich offers additional features which substantially extend the area of application to different scrap types. Efficient heating with two regenerative burner pairs results in a specific gas consumption for melting operation of less than 550 kWh per ton.
The furnace is equipped with oxygen measurement as well as separate natural gas and combustion air regulation to ensure clean combustion in terms of stringent emission regulations.
An electromagnetic pump ensures proper collection of chips and alloying elements as well as good melt circulation, constantly high melting capacity and homogenous temperature distribution in the furnace.
The supply package additionally includes a railbound pusher-type charging machine with a capacity of 25 tons, to efficiently load the furnace within a few charging cycles.
Production started in January 2013.
The SGO-70+ is the largest combined melting and casting furnace that Hertwich has delivered to date.
