Abstract

The German energy transition (“Energiewende”) keeps political and public discussions on sustainability and its economic impact lively — thus challenging the industry, especially the energy-intensive industries, with demands by national and European energy and climate policies. The production sites of Arcelor-Mittal in Germany can be proud to be part of the most energyefficient steel production sites in the world. Sustainability is at the heart of our business and since energy costs exceed all other costs in the production processes, we followed the path of investing with consistency in order to reduce our energy use to the absolute minimal amount required to produce steel. ArcelorMittal Germany has continually invested in its facilities to maintain and further improve excellence in cost and energy efficiency. Our sites have a long history in working with energy management systems and have all implemented, or are currently implementing, the energy-management system according to DIN ISO 50001. In Bremen for example, we have invested in secondary dust removal. ArcelorMittal Hamburg spends approximately 15% of its annual capex directly on energy efficiency projects. ArcelorMittal Duisburg-Ruhrort has recently completed a state-of-the-art wire rod mill for 95 million €. In Eisenhüttenstadt there are about 80 small and medium-sized projects ongoing in the primary and finishing departments. The following overview about projects at ArcelorMittal Germany sites gives an insight about our approach of investing with consistency in energy efficiency projects. A lot has been accomplished already, and we are ready to go beyond.
